Book questions how 2 Africans businessmen died in Springfield hotel

Two South African men, on a trip to ride motorcycles along historic Route 66, were found dead in 2015 in separate rooms at a Springfield hotel.

How they died was not immediately apparent.

But six weeks later, the Springfield Police Department announced the mystery had been solved after testing from the CDC: the two men — Gerrit Strydom, 45, and James Bethel, 44 — died from cerebral malaria.

It seemed the two men must have been bitten by infected mosquitoes during a fishing trip back in Africa, fallen ill and died after traveling to Springfield.

Case closed. Or at least, that’s how it appeared.

But when the News-Leader requested the full investigative report in the case last month, the response from a police department spokeswoman was that the case is still considered open five years later — and the

Choice Hotels or Extended Stay: Which is a Better Hotel Stock?

The Hotel and Motels industry is currently grappling with the coronavirus woes. In order to mitigate the spread of the virus, companies have been adhering to temporary closures; travel restrictions; cancellation of events, conferences and meetings; social-distancing measures and other governmental regulations. Resultantly, occupancy rates and revenue per available room (RevPAR) have been negatively impacted.

Per STR, the U.S. hotel industry’s occupancy for the week ended Oct 3, 2020, came in at 47.9% compared with 48.7% for the week ended Sep 26. Meanwhile, RevPAR indicated a decline of 48.1% year over year, for the week ended Oct 3. Notably, we believe that the pandemic is likely to continue and have an adverse material impact on the hospitality industry for some time. So far this year, the Zacks Hotels and Motels industry have declined 24.2% against the S&P 500’s growth of 7.9%.

However, with cost-saving initiatives and digital enhancements in place,

Holiday hotel bookings push out locals seeking shelter from storm power outages

ALBANY – The confluence of a days-long power outage in some communities and Columbus Day weekend means that many in the Capital Region who are seeking shelter in local hotels will likely be left shivering, in the dark, at home.

Hotels in and around the Capital Region are largely booked with leaf peepers and National Grid crews. Thus, the 46,000 National Grid and 130 NYSEG customers still without power as of late Friday afternoon who were hoping to book a room for a night or two until their electricity is restored after Wednesday’s thunderstorm are having to make a lot of calls to book a room.

“I’ve been told that 600 rooms were needed for work crews,” said Jill Delaney, president and CEO of Discover Albany. “That’s not typical, but they couldn’t double up because of COVID. Each crew person needs an individual space. But there are still some (hotels)

“The market in Miami was unreal before the pandemic; 2019 was a record-breaking year for me and it looked like 2020 was going to be one of the best years in my 20-plus year career of selling hospitality assets,” she said, “but then everything shut down.”

Gale described the energy of the market during that time

14-story hotel, new restaurants, more gaming space coming to ilani Casino Resort

A major expansion at ilani Casino Resort will add a 14-story hotel, two new restaurants and more gaming space, according to the casino’s operators. In addition, ilani’s new 2,700-space, six-story parking garage is set to open next month.

On Oct. 15, workers will begin the expansion projects by first adding about 17,000 square feet to the casino’s floor space, said ilani President Kara Fox-LaRose. Workers will remove an existing wall in the casino near the food court to reveal the expansion, which is already under the same roof as the casino, but it’s currently a dirt floor with exposed beams. The project will cost $30 million, she said.

The expansion will add roughly 200 jobs, 200 slot machines and additional table games. It is scheduled to open next summer. Ilani originally planned to open the expansion at the end of this summer along with the parking garage, but the COVID-19
