MICHELIN Guide Presents ‘Virtual Family Meal’ to Honor California Restaurants’ Creativity, Strength, Resilience

GREENVILLE, S.C., Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The MICHELIN Guide paused the announcement of Stars, Bib Gourmands and Plates from the 2020 California selection. This decision was determined after speaking with chefs and listening to feedback from restaurants severely impacted by COVID-19 and tragic wildfires across the state.

“We know the restaurant industry still faces enormous challenges in getting back on its feet,” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the MICHELIN Guides. “We are confident this will occur, as soon as health and safety protocols allow. Diners won’t lose their desire for great food; in fact, the importance of a shared meal has never been so present in our minds as it is at this time.”

The MICHELIN Guide will host an online gathering of support for California restaurants through a Virtual Family Meal on Oct. 27, 2020, at 4 p.m. PT. “Family meal” is a cherished tradition around the

With the holiday season approaching, California last week released new guidelines for socializing that prohibit gatherings among more than three households.

While coronavirus cases are dipping — and hospitalizations and deaths are at their lowest levels in months — officials are emphasizing the importance of maintaining health safety measures.

“We are entering into the holidays, but also we’re entering into the part of the year when things cool down and people are more likely to congregate … in settings that put their physical proximity and likelihood of transmitting disease at higher risk,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.

“Don’t be misled that this disease is any less deadly. Quite the contrary — it is as deadly as it’s ever been in the context of those that are high risk.”

When a Politically Divided Family Goes on Vacation

RETIREES RICHARD AND LISA Starling are Georgia natives turned Cornell academics; their son Michael and his wife, Diane, are barely getting by in Texas; their son Thad and his boyfriend, Jake, live comfortably in Brooklyn. These family members voted for different candidates. Their experiences of religion range from solace to trauma, they have an unwritten list of topics they don’t discuss, and it takes tragedy and close confines to break open their surface-level peace and push them into the conversations they’ve been avoiding.

These characters appear in David James Poissant’s latest novel Lake Life, which is set in 2018 but explores family dynamics that feel especially relevant in 2020. Jen Hinst-White spoke with Poissant in late July, five months into COVID-19 social distancing, two months after George Floyd’s death and the resulting groundswell of protest, and three months before the national election.

Jen Hinst-White: You could have written a

11 elections, 3 wins: The Ahmed Family of Maryland doesn’t give up

The Ahmed family in Bowie, Maryland, USA, is remarkable in more ways than one. Between Shukoor Ahmed, 58, and his two daughters – Raaheela, 27, and Shabnam, 25 – the family has contested and campaigned for 11 elections in their district from 1998 onwards. Except for three – including when Raaheela was elected by a decisive majority of almost 32,000 votes to Prince George’s County Board of Education, District 5, in 2016 – they lost all the others.

And yet, determined to represent religious minorities and people of colour, and to use the electoral platform to raise vital social, economic and political issues, they showed up time and time again.

This month, Raaheela will run for reelection, but since her position is uncontested, she is likely to continue for another four-year term. This is the 12th
