Future Travel: Drawn to the Edge in the Western Balkans

A forward-thinking cross-border collaboration between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro shines a light on one of Europe’s most beautiful regions.

The bordering municipalities of Foca and Plužine are in different countries—Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro respectively. That’s about where the differences end. What they share is one mountain-, lake- and river-strewn landscape, an ancient culture, and a combined reputation as the up-and-coming adventure-travel star here in the heart of Southeastern Europe’s Western Balkans.

To solidify that commonality, the two municipalities have launched an historic collaboration. The Tourism, Adrenalin, and Rafting Adventure project (T.A.R.A)—a responsible tourism partnership supported financially by the European Union—shines a spotlight on this border-straddling adventure hub. In doing so, it promotes the communities and strengths of each municipality while working to increase the overall success of both.

‘World’s best island’ reopens to local tourists in Philippines

MANILA, Oct 11 (dpa): Boracay Island, among the Philippines’ most popular destinations thanks to its white sandy beaches, has reopened to more local tourists, nearly seven months since inter-island travel was halted in the country amid a coronavirus lockdown.

The holiday hotspot, once voted the best island in the world by Conde Nast Traveller magazine, is now open to tourists from all over the Philippines.

Until now, the island, 311km south of Manila, only allowed visitors from nearby provinces.

International travellers, still subject to entry restrictions, will have to wait, however.

Before the pandemic, the island had previously been shut down entirely after the country’s president condemned it as a “cesspool” and ordered the temporary closing to all visitors in 2018.

The government now hopes the reopening of Boracay would jump-start the revival of its tourism industry, which has been badly hit by the coronavirus outbreak.

Italy topped the list of travellers’ favourite countries in the 33rd annual awards, based on more than half a million votes, with a percentage score representing overall average satisfaction levels of 94.05. Sri Lanka, Portugal, Japan, Greece and Indonesia followed,
