New York’s Storied Roosevelt Joins Growing List of Prominent Hotels to Close Their Doors

New York City’s once seemingly indomitable hospitality industry sustained another blow this week when the owners of the historic Roosevelt Hotel, a 96-year-old Midtown institution, announced that the 1,025-room hotel will cease operations on Oct. 31.

Named for President Theodore Roosevelt, the hotel opened in the fall of 1924, and its Italian Renaissance façade of chiseled marble and limestone has been an unchanging fixture of the Manhattan streetscape ever since. In a city filled with sleek new hotel towers, the Roosevelt was a favorite of locals and tourists alike because much of its interior remained unchanged, too. The “Grand Dame of Madison Avenue,” as some have called the hotel, has served as a backdrop for many films including The French Connection, Malcolm X and the 2017 Netflix series Wormwood. Gordon Gekko’s infamous “Greed is good” speech from the 1987 film Wall Street was shot in the Roosevelt’s ballroom.

Indian Workers in Libya Released after Month-long Abduction | India

CAIRO — An armed group has released seven Indian workers a month after their abduction in Libya, the Indian Foreign Ministry said Oct. 12.

The Indian nationals, who are engineers and technicians working for an oil services company, were freed Oct. 11 after negotiations with the armed group, the interior ministry of eastern Libya’s government said in a statement. It was not immediately clear who was behind the abduction.

In recent years India, like many other countries, has imposed a travel ban on Libya because of the security situation in the mostly lawless North African country.

India’s Foreign Ministry Oct. 12 confirmed the kidnapped workers’ release after “steadfast cooperation” from Libyan authorities and tribal elders in the region.

It said the workers, who were abducted on Sep. 14 while at Al-Shwerif, over 400 kilometers (248 miles) southwest of Tripoli, were handed over to their employer, the al-Shola al-Mudia company, in

How pandemic bento boxes became care packages and a new business model

Growing up outside of Tokyo, Chef Kenji Miyaishi’s mother used to send him off with bento boxes of onigiri rice balls, karaage fried chicken, tamago-yaki egg omelets and vegetables from her garden.

Now, as he’s pivoted his upscale restaurant in Napa, California, to prepare and deliver bento boxes amid the pandemic, he says he aims to serve with the same values of precision, culture and care his mother did.

Bento boxes can be traced back to the Kamakura period in 12th century Japan, and this year — with restaurants relying on takeout and delivery — they’ve become a relevant and culturally authentic way for kaiseki chefs across the country to stay in business.

And some chefs say, at a time of uncertainty, the boxes have also come to symbolize nurturing and comfort.

“Bento is usually made by a mother for her children

Thai Resort Offers to Drop Lawsuit Against Jailed American Guest if He Apologizes for Bad Reviews

Getty Koh Chang island in Thailand

Thailand’s Sea View Koh Chang resort says it will drop the criminal defamation suit it filed against an American guest, as long as he apologizes for the negative reviews and makes amends.

Over the weekend, the Associated Press reported that the hotel, located on the island of Koh Chang, emailed them a statement saying they “would be pleased to conclude the complaint under conditions that Mr. Barnes shows his sincerity and takes full responsibility for what had happened and remedy the situation.”

Last month, Wesley Barnes, a U.S. citizen who lives in the Asian country, posted a series of Tripadvisor reviews slamming the Sea View Koh Chang resort, prompting the hotel to take legal action against him. The resort issued a complaint to local police citing Thailand’s defamation laws.

Barnes was taken into custody and stayed behind bars for a weekend as he was

Holiday Travel: What to Know Before Booking Flights This Year

“We expect significant movement in November and December capacity to be adjusted lower in the coming weeks,” Helane Becker, an aviation analyst at Cowen investment bank, wrote in a memo on Tuesday. Carriers like United, JetBlue, Alaska, and Delta are taking “a more aggressive approach by reducing capacity early to limit cash burn,” Becker said.

But some airlines, including Southwest, American, and Spirit, are making such adjustments closer to the day of travel, Becker says. Southwest, for instance, has been combining flights and adding layovers to numerous routes during the holiday season.

“We recently adjusted our flight schedule for November and December to reflect the demand we’re seeing for travel, a process we’ve been continually undertaking throughout this year,” a Southwest spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We’ve worked hard to keep service in all of our cities and to provide flights that are in highest demand. We realize that
