International travel magazine calls Singapore’s Covid-19 response “a model for others”

Singapore—International luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler called Singapore’s Covid-19 response “a model for others” in an online article published on Tuesday, September 8. The article will also appear in the magazine’s print issue next month.

The reason the accolade was given by Condé Nast Traveler is for the government’s SG Clean initiative, which began in February and seeks to have businesses and establishments meet a particular set of hygiene and safety standards through issuing certifications to those that comply.

According to Condé Nast Traveler, this is necessary for Singapore, given its reliance on tourism as a source of revenue, as well as its status as a global transport and logistics hub linking 120 countries on six continents.

The SG Clean “seal of approval” is given to companies spanning a wide variety of sectors, from preschools to hawker centers to shopping malls to hotels, transport

The council, which voted 9-0, approved spending $67 million for a former Residence Inn in the Hotel Circle area and $39.5 million for a former Residence Inn in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood —locations that are expected to be move-in ready by Dec. 31, 2020.

“Allowing people to live unsafely on the streets is not OK,” City Council President Georgette Gomez said. “Today, the council took a huge leap forward by creating 332 new apartments with supportive services for more than 400

Hawaii’s Royal Kona Resort to reopen after 7-month closure

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — The Royal Kona Resort on Hawaii island plans to reopen to guests following a seven-month closure amid the coronavirus pandemic and a multi-million dollar renovation.

The three-tower resort overlooking Kailua Bay on the western side of the Big Island expects to open Thursday, West Hawaii Today reported Tuesday.

The Royal Kona is the only property in the area expected to reopen on the same day the state launches a program enabling travelers to avoid a 14-day quarantine by taking COVID-19 tests before arriving in Hawaii.

Since the implementation of the quarantine mandated by Democratic Gov. David Ige in March, visitor arrivals to the Big Island have dropped 97% and hotel occupancy has hovered at around 30%, the newspaper reported.

Royal Kona Resort General Manager Jay Rubenstein said there have been “quite a few” reservations already at the 428-room property owned by Honolulu-based Hogan Hospitality Group.

Covid-19 Travel Bubbles Were Set to Restore Flying but Haven’t Taken Off

A few months ago, travel bubbles were the big idea for reopening skies across the Asia-Pacific region. Countries would strike deals with each other to allow air travel with certain restrictions, many officials said, and those would expand to regional pacts.

It’s proving hard to do, even for countries that have largely managed to keep a lid on the coronavirus.

Take Singapore, a city-state whose economy is so dependent on its airport, officials liken it to the lungs. Passenger volumes are languishing at 1.5% of pre-coronavirus levels, threatening its status as an aviation hub and the investment that comes with it.

The region’s other airports are similarly quiet, according to the latest data from August. Hong Kong International Airport saw 1.4% of passenger traffic compared with August 2019. At Japan’s Narita airport, international travelers in August were just 3.3% of the same month last year. At South Korea’s Incheon International

Louisiana hurricanes are causing thousands to languish in hotels. Now they’re waiting for help from FEMA.

“We’re not complaining about it. It’s a place to live,” said Skyla M. Thomas, 20. “But at the same time, it’s disgusting.”

She and her partner, Quaylon Pitre, thought they had stability 125 miles away on the outskirts of Lake Charles, La., where Pitre worked as a casino security guard. Thomas cared full-time for their children, including an infant who has been diagnosed with Down syndrome. They rented a three-bedroom house with a yard. Family members were nearby.

That was before Hurricane Laura screamed across the Louisiana shoreline on Aug. 27 with sustained winds of more than 150 mph, devastating their home and thousands of others. They now are part of a diaspora of evacuees spread across hundreds of miles who have been without a permanent home for six weeks. Their numbers are expected to swell after Hurricane Delta rumbled ashore Friday night with Category 2 strength about 15 miles
